How to Actually Stand Out (Without Feeling Fake)

Published on April 15

Applying for apprenticeships can feel like shouting into the void sometimes. Loads of people are going for the same roles, so it’s easy to wonder how you’re supposed to stand out, especially if you don’t have loads of (or any!) experience.

But don’t worry! Employers aren’t expecting you to have it all worked out. They’re looking for potential, attitude, and effort.

Your CV doesn’t need to be packed with jobs or work experience if you don’t have any yet. It just needs to show who you are. School projects, group work, helping out at events, even hobbies, they all count if you explain them properly. It’s about showing how you think, how you work with others, and how you approach things.

When it comes to applications, the biggest mistake is being too generic. If your answers could be copied and pasted into any application, they’re not doing you any favours. Don’t rely on Chat GPT! Try to make it clear why that role caught your attention. Even a small detail can make a difference.

And please don’t just say you’re hardworking or a team player without explaining why. Anyone can say that. What makes you believable is backing it up with real examples, even if they’re small.

Also, don’t rush it. It’s tempting to hit submit and move on, but small mistakes can cost you.

Take a few extra minutes to read everything back, it’s worth it.

You don’t need to pretend to be someone you’re not. Being genuine and showing effort goes a long way. Get in touch if you need more help.
